ats both love america but we need to have leadership -- leadership in washington that will actually bring people together and get the job done and could not care less if it's a republican or a democrat. i've done it before, i'll do it again. i'm mitt romney, and i approve this message. one week a way and the affects of the storm sandy changing the direction of the election. >> we're going to do everything that we can to help you get back on your feet. >> in ohio a quiet day as he helped with relief this as new jersey outspoken governor said that the storm clean up is top
6:31 pm
priority. >> at the moment i could care about election day. >> our special coverage starts right now. thanks for joining us tonight on the news edge and the killer storm and the ripple affect is the big story tonight. we're going to start with tom and. >> it's correct no one is sure what impact this storm will have on how a big part of the country will vote or be able to vote. while maryland, delaware and new jersey are obama territory, how they conduct themselves now is a big thing tonight. >> we will start in washington as obama canceled the campaign appearances and opted to the head quarters of the red cross and asking to donate to the relief funds. >> there are communities that
6:32 pm
can be affected. there are risks of flooding and downed power lines and risk of high winds. >> in ohio meanwhile mitt gathered with supporters gathering items. he thanked the crowd. >> we have heavy hearts as you know with all the suffering that's going on and a lot of people hurting this morning and last night. the storm goes on. >> in columbus joe said that the white house has received briefings on the disaster response and the pentagon maybe called in to help. >> the president made an offer and the possibilities extend and the defense department. >> meanwhile in new jersey
6:33 pm
republican chris christy made it clear that he is occupied and now off the campaign trail in support of mitt. >> i will tell you this administration at the moment could give a dam less about election day. if you hear about the devastation that's upon this state. i am sure that while the nation election is obviously important, that the people of new jersey at this moment would really be unhappy with me if they thought for a second i was occupying my time thinking of how i was going to get people to vote a week from today. >> now, with seven days left until the election a wild card in the form of a wild storm has put both campaigns into unexpected territory on october 30th 2012. >> well, president obama will travel the storm of new jersey to view the storm damage from the storm that struck the east
6:34 pm
coast to thank first responders and romney is sell yuled to have a rally in florida. >> all right. tonight millions without power and neighbors in ruins. the after math of sandy will be felt for days. lets bring in sue for what's ahead. >> yeah, we're going to focus on the northeast and the new jersey coastline into new york city and beyond where they are 8 million people without power. we don't see any major systems affecting them and even though that sandy is making her presence felt. they are going to have cloudy skies. we don't even see any big rain. that will aid in the clean up. we can take this out to the end of the week and the skies will breathen and why there's millions of power lines to be
6:35 pm
restored and carpets and craps to be cleaned, weather will not be a problem in the next couple of days. well, what about election day? well, we're going to get an idea of what it will look like. i think that we're going to be in good shape. sandy has taken a lot of energy out for the time being. we will start on the west coast and there will be some showers but through the middle part of the country, it's warm and sunny. most of it is dry and perhaps some showers and nothing heavy and maybe a small section of north eastern pennsylvania and right now we expect it to be dry and sunny with a high temperature of about 60 degrees. so bryan, lucky things will be settling down. that's going to take weeks or months to get everybody back on line. >> one of the most swing states
6:36 pm
and sandy has caused some issues one week before election day. nine weeks before they were closed today most of them in the northern virginia area and south western virginia. the governor says that absentee voting will be restored and he is kind to join us by phone. now, do you think that from here on out this is a minor thing or a major problem? >> you talking about absentee voting or the whole storm? >> well, the lapse that we have had in the storm. is it going to keep people from voting? >> i don't think so. i appreciate you letting me be on. people have been focused on this election for a long time. the people of virginia did a great job working together and heeding the warnings and
6:37 pm
working together and hopefully all the power will be back on. we have asked all the local governments that have had a down or registers office on monday and tuesday to extend their house over the next three or four days, so anybody that did not get to vote monday or tuesday can take advantage of those late hours to vote, so nobody does not have that absentee ballot rules. it does not change the rules. >> we know how close this election is and we have seen them getting tuned over to lawyers, does anything that's happened involve the absentee voting law a ground work for any challenges on the road? >> i don't think so. we're hoping this is an extension that we have requested and there's several in northern virginia that had
6:38 pm
to close their offices in the interest of public safety. we're pretty confident with working together that they are going to be extensions of time for people to vote and then we have no reason to believe that all of the places will not have the power restored by the end of the week. there should be no disruption and we ask the citizen to make sure that they vote and the can at this times were nice enough to cancel the appearances on sunday for mitt and monday for the president, so they will be back no doubt again starting on thursday. everybody should be able to vote. >> governor for virginia. we thank you. >> thank you for having me on. >> we invited the mayor to join us, but he was unavailable. early voting will resume tomorrow and it was canceled for two days because of the
6:39 pm
storm. the voting hours have changed. early voters can cast from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. and it was scheduled to end on thursday. we're far from over tonight. the damage from superstorm and the affects on the presidential election. we're going to dig deeper with mark next. we will be right back.
6:40 pm
we had a good d group of people. good group of employees out there. this was a booming place. and mitt romney and bain capital turned it in to a junk yard. i was suddenly, 60 years old. i had no health care. mainly i was thinking about my family. how am i going to take care of my family. he promised us the same things he's promising the united states. and he'll give you the same thing he gave us. nothing. anncr: priorities usa action is responsible for the content of this advertising.

lavar arringhate it.ate losing. but right now we're losing jobs and money for... our schools to casinos in other states like west virginia. question seven creates 12,000 jobs with a new resort casino... and expanded table games here, in maryland. we all win with question seven. new jobs. money for schools, and instead of marylanders... spending 550 million dollars in other states... it gets invested here. vote for question seven. for maryland. i'm on my way. could have gotten me one. i did. try the unmistakable flavor of dunkin' donuts smoked sausage breakfast sandwich. hurry in today. america runs on dunkin'.
6:42 pm
hard to believe but election day is next tuesday. super storm sandy is throwing a bit of a curve ball. fox 5 joins us now and we're to talk about the affects and we're only a week away. what does it do to the campaign? >> well, it changes the travel schedule. we have a week to go and the president did not campaign yesterday and did not campaign today. he is going to go to new jersey and that's not considered campaign. there's a safe state. romney did a noncampaign event, so it compacts and they have to be more judicious on how they are going to spend the rest of their time and it gives the president to act like a president and what governor romney did not want was a president doing what he is supposed to do and he attacking the office. >> so is it back to the economy as we go to the end of the
6:43 pm
week? >> well, that's right. i was told in tampa that will be the deciding factor and that's what romnthink will elect him. >> there's some talk. could they move election day because of what happened on the east coast? >> let me clarify this since 1845 the election date is the first tuesday in november. after the harvest and before winter. there has to be a federal law and they would have to come back and change the election date. what can happen is that the counties can extend voting hours and start earlier or close later and make adjustments like that but tuesday november 6 is election day and about a third of the people would have voted before election day any way. >> there's nothing to do with the weather but this could
6:44 pm
affect the outcome of the election. what swing states have automatic recounts? >> florida and colorado if it's the range of .05 which is less than one percent then they have to have a recount and in ohio the whole election seems to be centered on ohio. it's a stricter requirement and it's 0.2. so whether you -- it has nothing to do with the weather and those states there's requirements and there have to be recounts by state law. >> okay. coming up is fema in the forefront. next we're going to discuss what the stance could have on the election. be right back. [ earnest ] out of the blue one day,
6:45 pm
we were told to build a 30-foot stage. gathered the guys and we built that 30-foot stage, not knowing what it was for. just days later,
6:46 pm
all three shifts were told to assemble in the warehouse. a group of people walked out on that stage and told us that the plant is now closed and all of you are fired... i looked both ways, i looked at the crowd, and...we all just lost our jobs. we don't have an income. mitt romney made over 100 million dollars by shutting down our plant and devastated our lives. turns out that when we built that stage, it was like building my own coffin, and it just made me sick. 6:47 pm
mitt's primary campaign comments coming back to haunt home and what he made last year involving fema. we're back in the news room with that. >> yeah, this happened during a cnn debate when romney was running for the nomination. romney was asked whether or not he was in favor of the federal government giving up it's relief responsibility and during that debate romney says that he was in favor of it and
6:48 pm
that it threatens the future of our kids. here is a portion of what he had to say. >> every time you have on occasion and send it back, that's the right direction. if you can go further and send it back, that's better. what we should cut and ask ourself the opposite question. what should we keep. we should say one of the things that we're doing that we don't have to do and we have to stop doing them. >> so to bring this back to day and earlier we showed you romney at a relief event gathering donations for the victims. now, members traveling with the governor asked him no less than five times about the statement about eliminating fema and over the report he says that he would not respond to that or if he intended to travel to new jersey to view the damage
6:49 pm
personally. >> how are obama and romney handling themselves? lets start with fema and mitt romney not answering questions today for the federal funding for fema. what's the question on that? >> well, i will maybe make some news. if you take states will new york and new jersey a storm is terrible but those are the two richest states in the country and if they can't deal with a storm the next question is what does the state government do. what does a state government do? i ask that at the time of louisiana with katrina and the answer is not a whole lot. >> brandon, i just want to ask what good was fema during katrina? >> well, it was not good but it has done a better job here. you saw the governor praising and this is not a time of politics but a time to get it right and to respond to
6:50 pm
people's needs. the reason that the federal government needs help is because they can't afford it. >> they can't afford it. well, new york and new jersey have you seen their sell's tax. what do they do with all the money? they waste it. >> that's your governor. >> yeah, ours and both parties. look at fema. you know one reason that we keep fema, they make so much millions and billions get tossed in and those companies all have contracts and make a fortune and they need to keep fema. >> i hope that romney takes the tack that jack did. >> jack, how hard is it on mitt romney this day when chris is raving at how bam has been.
6:51 pm
>> well, chris christie, does not want romney to win. it's in his interest for obama to win. the individuals come is that this storm helps. i am not so sure about that. all of it was for romney prior to this. if you freeze it, romney had it. the waves were headed and i don't know when you freeze things this favors obama. i am not so sure. >> well, that's a spin, but i i don't think that's the case. i don't buy that he had that momentum. obama has had most of the swing states. that's going to be the key is that election is one week from today. obama's people are on the ground and going to be going door to door and getting the vote out. >> one thing to think about here is the undecided has already broke before the storm. had this storm come a week
6:52 pm
earlier, it could have seen an impact. romney went over 50 and that tells us that the undecided had already broken. they are not likely to break back again. >> how is the president going change the numbers. a lot of polls have romney up a point. >> it does not matter. those are weighted on who is likely to vote. there's some questions on that. the polls that matter is ohio, florida and virginia and, you know, even wisconsin and iowa as well. those are the ones that if obama can hold the midwest and that's what he is trying to hold. if he can hold that there's no way romney can win. >> it looks like romney will take ohio, florida and virginia. >> that's a dream. >> if he does that and he takes
6:53 pm
colorado too and iowa, all of those things are likely, i think that romney is going to win the election. romney only needs 269 to win. in one of those and it could happen, if you get a 269 it goes to the house and they line up state by state and they win because of all the states. one small point romney only needs 269 to get over the finish line. i think that he is going to get there. >> i think that's your wish there. >> thank you guys are coming in. coming up the devastation hits one of the colleagues hard. the affects that it is having on a hometown. would cost our economy. newspapers called it "economically destructive." like allen's votes to give tax breaks to companies... that ship jobs overseas, his economic plan would... help big corporations, devastating the middle class.
6:54 pm
allen even voted against tax breaks for small businesses. virginia can't afford to go back to george allen. the democratic senatorial campaign committee... is responsible for the content of this advertising. a west virginia casino launching the biggest ad barrage ever. don't be misled. the washington post says question seven is just... common sense. it'll create 4,000 permanent jobs. and stop maryland from losing millions to other states... every year. that's why business, labor, and teachers all support... question seven. and so does the washington post. vote for question seven. it's just common sense. what mitt romney's tv ads say about women? or what mitt romney himself says? mitt romney: do i believe the supreme court... should overturn roe v. wade? yes. and it would be my preference that they, that they... reverse roe v. wade. hopefully reverse roe v. wade. overturn roe v. wade. planned parenthood, we're going to get rid of that.
6:55 pm
i'll cut off funding to planned parenthood. anncr: no matter what mitt romney's ads say. we know what he'll do. president obama: i'm barack obama and... i approve this message.
6:56 pm
once in a while tonight it's the storm that wrecked the east coast and new jersey. tom is here now with some of the images. >> yeah, you experienced some of the storm and nobody could compare what happened in new jersey to new orleans. it's been a surreal experience to see the places that you grew up on and destroyed in so many places. throughout the last 24 hours, it's been a combination of trying to get in touch with relatives and checking on my brother and checking on a cousin and not being able to
6:57 pm
reach her and then getting the word that she was okay. one gift that we're giving is the gift of social met i don't recollecting. you can keep in contact even if you can't reach them on the phone or in person. this is what i have been seeing across the facebook today. this is a video that a friend posted. this is new jersey in ocean county new jersey. that's the thunderbird condo that you saw. that's a neighborhood on fire. these are small houses and obviously some gas lines went there and the flames by the seaside heights and the beach volunteer fire departments in this town were called out and a lot of these guys do not do this and they are volunteers and they are taking care of their on homes and many of those destroyed and they now have to go out and rescue other people. i want to show you some of the
6:58 pm
pictures and you can zoom in here on the ipad. these are some of the photos. lets get in here and this is new jersey and this is the beach basically where my mom taught me how to someone. this is 16th avenue and the board walk is destroyed. this is a boat in new pleasant beach in new jersey. my friend tom this is what he saw all over the shore today. people using gas cans trying to get fuel for the generators because there was no power where i grew up. >> okay. thank you for joining us. back here tonight at 10:00 for the news tonight. [ minto ] you know, those ads saying mitt romney
6:59 pm
would ban all abortions and contraception seemed a bit extreme. so i looked into it. turns out, romney doesn't oppose contraception at all. in fact, he thinks abortion should be an option
